How to adopt a dog in Kolkata

Adopting a dog in Kolkata is simpler than it looks, and it usually starts with the shelters and NGOs listed above. Groups like Debasree Roy Foundation, ARC and PAWS regularly have indie dogs, puppies and rehomed pets waiting for families. Here is how it typically works.

  • Pick a shelter or rescue from the list above and reach out. Tell them what suits your home, whether that is a playful pup, a calm older dog, or simply whoever needs you most.
  • Meet the dogs in person. Spend a little time with them before you decide. A wagging tail and an easy temperament tell you a lot.
  • Expect a simple screening. Most Kolkata shelters ask a few questions, and some do a quick home check, to be sure each dog goes to a safe and committed home.
  • Complete the formalities. Usually a short adoption form and a small donation that funds more rescues.
  • Ask about the essentials before you leave. Vaccination and deworming status, sterilisation, the right diet for the first few weeks, and who to call if you need help settling in.

Prefer to start online? Follow Dog with Blog’s adoption updates on Instagram, or check the NGOs above for dogs currently up for adoption in Kolkata. And please, adopt, don’t shop. The indie waiting on a Kolkata street corner makes just as loyal a companion as any pedigree.

How to report an injured or stray animal in Kolkata

If you find an injured, sick or distressed animal on the streets of Kolkata, acting quickly and calmly gives it the best chance.

  • Call a verified rescue number from the list above. Sonata Foundation runs a 24×7 on-call vet and an ambulance, and Chhaya, ARC and PFA Kolkata (ASHARI) all handle rescue and treatment.
  • Describe the situation clearly: the animal’s condition, whether it can stand or walk, and any visible injuries.
  • Share the exact location with a landmark or map pin so rescuers do not lose time.
  • Stay nearby if it is safe. A frightened animal often hides, and your presence helps the team find it.
  • Do not move a badly injured animal unless it is in immediate danger. Handling a fracture or spinal injury wrongly can do more harm than the accident did.

While you wait, offer a little water but hold off on food in case surgery is needed. If the case is serious and no helpline is reachable, take the animal to the nearest vet yourself if you safely can. Cruelty to animals is an offence under Indian law, so you can also involve the police. See our guide to animal laws in India.

In case you are trying to help an injured animal – please note that not all of these shelters may have an ambulance. If you can take the injured animal to the nearest facility, it would be great. If you have called up the animal shelter, and they’ve dispatched an ambulance, please see if you can comfort the animal in need and provide first aid, and care till the ambulance arrives.

Please consider that most of these shelters are often understaffed and in need of resources – which may not always be financial aid but even old clothes, newspapers or most important of them, your time as a volunteer.

This isn’t an exhaustive list – if you know of any other resources that may be of help with regard to dog adoption in Kolkata, please suggest them in the comments below.

Frequently asked questions

Which NGOs help with dog adoption in Kolkata?

Well-known ones include Debasree Roy Foundation, Animal Rescue & Care (ARC), PAWS and Love N Care for Animals, alongside Chhaya, Sonata Foundation and PFA Kolkata (ASHARI) listed on this page. Most handle rescue, treatment and adoption.

How do I adopt a dog in Kolkata?

Contact any shelter above, visit to meet the dogs, complete a short adoption form and usually a small donation, then ask about vaccination, sterilisation and diet before bringing your dog home.

Is it better to adopt an indie dog in Kolkata?

Yes. Indie dogs are hardy, intelligent and perfectly suited to Kolkata’s climate. Shelters always have indies and pups waiting, and adopting one gives a deserving dog a second chance.

Where can I report an injured or stray dog in Kolkata?

Call a rescue number from the list above, such as Sonata Foundation (24×7 ambulance) or ARC, share the animal’s location and condition, and stay nearby if it is safe until help arrives. If the animal was deliberately harmed, you can also file a police complaint.

  33. Hi,
My name is Aditya, i live in Behala, kolkata.
I have 2 puppies up for adoption, one male and one female. Both the puppies are around six months old and are of Indian periah breed.
Both the dogs are fully vaccinated and are in excellent condition.
The main reason for giving them for adoption is because the old lady is shifting and moving to a new house, and because of her age it is really deficult for her to look after these puppies.
Kindly think about these puppies, they are really really cute, i can’t adopt them myself cause i already have one and i am not allowed to have a second one.
Trust me it’s the best feeling in the world, the feeling of saving a live by adoption.
