How to adopt a dog in Kolkata

Adopting a dog in Kolkata is simpler than it looks, and it usually starts with the shelters and NGOs listed above. Groups like Debasree Roy Foundation, ARC and PAWS regularly have indie dogs, puppies and rehomed pets waiting for families. Here is how it typically works.

  • Pick a shelter or rescue from the list above and reach out. Tell them what suits your home, whether that is a playful pup, a calm older dog, or simply whoever needs you most.
  • Meet the dogs in person. Spend a little time with them before you decide. A wagging tail and an easy temperament tell you a lot.
  • Expect a simple screening. Most Kolkata shelters ask a few questions, and some do a quick home check, to be sure each dog goes to a safe and committed home.
  • Complete the formalities. Usually a short adoption form and a small donation that funds more rescues.
  • Ask about the essentials before you leave. Vaccination and deworming status, sterilisation, the right diet for the first few weeks, and who to call if you need help settling in.

Prefer to start online? Follow Dog with Blog’s adoption updates on Instagram, or check the NGOs above for dogs currently up for adoption in Kolkata. And please, adopt, don’t shop. The indie waiting on a Kolkata street corner makes just as loyal a companion as any pedigree.

How to report an injured or stray animal in Kolkata

If you find an injured, sick or distressed animal on the streets of Kolkata, acting quickly and calmly gives it the best chance.

  • Call a verified rescue number from the list above. Sonata Foundation runs a 24×7 on-call vet and an ambulance, and Chhaya, ARC and PFA Kolkata (ASHARI) all handle rescue and treatment.
  • Describe the situation clearly: the animal’s condition, whether it can stand or walk, and any visible injuries.
  • Share the exact location with a landmark or map pin so rescuers do not lose time.
  • Stay nearby if it is safe. A frightened animal often hides, and your presence helps the team find it.
  • Do not move a badly injured animal unless it is in immediate danger. Handling a fracture or spinal injury wrongly can do more harm than the accident did.

While you wait, offer a little water but hold off on food in case surgery is needed. If the case is serious and no helpline is reachable, take the animal to the nearest vet yourself if you safely can. Cruelty to animals is an offence under Indian law, so you can also involve the police. See our guide to animal laws in India.

In case you are trying to help an injured animal – please note that not all of these shelters may have an ambulance. If you can take the injured animal to the nearest facility, it would be great. If you have called up the animal shelter, and they’ve dispatched an ambulance, please see if you can comfort the animal in need and provide first aid, and care till the ambulance arrives.

Please consider that most of these shelters are often understaffed and in need of resources – which may not always be financial aid but even old clothes, newspapers or most important of them, your time as a volunteer.

This isn’t an exhaustive list – if you know of any other resources that may be of help with regard to dog adoption in Kolkata, please suggest them in the comments below.

  12. I am writing to you with a heavy heart and a humble request. I have a 3-year-old Labrador dog named Eli, who has been with me for the past 3 years. She is my everything and a very good dog. She is friendly, playful, loyal, and obedient. She loves to cuddle, fetch, and go for walks.

However, due to some unfortunate circumstances, I am unable to take care of her anymore. I have lost my job and my father recently, and I am struggling to make ends meet. I also have some health issues that prevent me from giving her the attention and care she deserves. She has a skin disease that needs regular treatment and medication, which I cannot afford.

I love her more than anything in the world, but I cannot see her suffer like this. I want her to have a better life with someone who can provide her with everything she needs. That is why I am asking you to please help me find a new home for her or take her under your shelter.

I have never mated her and I don’t want anyone to do it either. She is not spayed, but she has been vaccinated and dewormed. She has no other health problems apart from the skin disease. She is very well-behaved and gets along with other dogs and people.

Please understand that this is not an easy decision for me. It breaks my heart to give her up, but I have no other choice. I hope you can accept my request and help me out in this difficult situation.

Please contact me if you are interested or have any questions. I will be waiting for your reply.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely, Prem

  14. The comment above from Sai Prem should be ignored. He is just a fraud, he just shows off as an animal lover and lacks basic etiquettes. First off he himself puts a comment and then starts being a miscreant. Don’t call him.
