Indore has been India’s cleanest city eight years running, but until now it hasn’t had a real answer on this site for the one question we keep getting asked: where do you actually adopt a dog here. Six individual rescuers have posted litters and strays through our own listings since March, proof the demand is real even without a shelter network behind it. Now there is one.

2. Animal Welfare & Rehabilitation Society (AWRS)

Run by Vaishali Shah, an architect by profession who took up stray rescue after witnessing a dog hit by a car in 2006. Since then AWRS has treated more than 10,000 stray and abandoned animals.

3. Jasraj Animal Shelter (TAWS)

A registered nonprofit since 2019 with a no-kill policy and a dedicated sanctuary wing for paralysed, blind and deaf animals. Runs its own ambulance service. Recognised by SPCA International. Rated 4.5/5 across 33 reviews on Justdial (ambulance service separately rated 4.6/5 across 9 reviews).

4. NeedyTail Foundation

Run by Kartik Tanwar, NeedyTail Foundation organises anti-rabies vaccination drives across Indore, including one held jointly with PFA Indore, and has been vocal in advocating for sterilisation and vaccination programs over stray dog relocation.

5. Vale of Dogs Foundation

Founded in Indore in 2022 by two friends, Tejaswini Gulati and Devansh Hablani, Vale of Dogs runs daily feeding across 15 locations in the city and a dedicated adoption program. They describe having rescued 70+ dogs and currently sheltering 50+, serving 200+ meals a day, figures we can no longer independently verify.

Dog bite or suspected rabies: no dedicated rabies hotline in Indore yet. Wash the wound with soap and running water immediately and see a doctor first, then call any shelter above for the dog’s vaccination history if it’s a known street dog.

How to adopt a dog in Indore

Adopting a dog in Indore usually starts with the shelters and rescues listed above.

• Pick a shelter or rescue from the list and reach out. Tell them what suits your home, a playful pup, a calm older dog, or simply whoever needs you most.
• Meet the dogs in person. A wagging tail and an easy temperament tell you a lot that a photo can’t.
• Expect a simple screening. Most rescues ask a few questions to make sure the dog goes to a safe, committed home.
• Complete the formalities, usually a short form.
• Ask about vaccination and deworming status, sterilisation, diet for the first few weeks, and who to call if you need help settling in.

How to report an injured or stray animal in Indore

If you find an injured, sick or distressed animal on Indore’s streets, acting quickly and calmly gives it the best chance.

• Call a verified rescue from the list above. Jasraj runs its own ambulance for the Rau side; AWRS covers the Bypass Road side.
• Describe the animal’s condition clearly: can it stand or walk, any visible injuries.
• Share the exact location with a landmark or map pin so rescuers don’t lose time.
• Stay nearby if it’s safe. A frightened animal often hides, and your presence helps the rescue team find it.
• Don’t move a badly injured animal unless it’s in immediate danger. Handling a fracture or spinal injury wrongly can do more harm than the accident did.

While you wait, offer a little water but hold off on food in case surgery is needed. If the case is serious and no helpline is reachable, take the animal to the nearest vet yourself if you safely can. Cruelty to animals is an offence under Indian law, so you can also involve the police.
