Fifteen of the last seventeen pets listed on Dog with Blog from Dehradun were cats. Since February, rescuers here have posted kittens from Indra Nagar, a mama cat with her two kittens, three bonded sisters and a litter of five indie puppies. When a reader in Dehradun wrote in last month asking us to cover dog adoption in Dehradun, we went looking for numbers we could stand behind.
Every number on this page is published by the organisation itself and backed by at least one more independent source. Groups we couldn’t confirm that way are named at the end without a number, and we’ll add them once we’ve called. Outside Dehradun, see our directory of animal helplines across India.

Animal shelters, rescues and helplines in Dehradun
1. Raahat Animal Hospital (People For Animals Dehradun)
Raahat is the hospital and sanctuary run by People For Animals Dehradun at Nanurkhera, on Sahastradhara Road. It has in-house vets, does surgery, and sterilises community dogs and cats.
Rescue works through WhatsApp only. Send a text to +91 99976 99474 with photos, a short video and the exact location. Raahat says it has no other helpline and doesn’t take rescue reports by email or social media. Messages are read from 10 am to 4 pm, and anything sent later is picked up the next day. Pickups run from 2 pm to 6 pm, for sick or injured adult street dogs and cruelty cases within 10 to 15 km of Clock Tower. Once admission is confirmed, they often ask you to bring the dog in yourself.
What Raahat won’t admit matters just as much. Dogs with distemper are seen as outpatients only, on a pay-what-you-can basis, and healthy puppies aren’t taken in. Housing is also down by about 90% while the shelter is rebuilt.
2. Healing Saathi, Selaqui
A sanctuary and veterinary hospital started by Mugdha Khatri, now home to more than 300 animals. Address: opposite the lane to Ganesh Marbles, Central Hope Town, Selaqui. The rescue line, 080 4736 3636 or 72920 05697, runs from 9:30 am to 5 pm and is closed on Thursdays. It doesn’t take WhatsApp calls. The hospital line, 86799 65697, is for treatment only, from 10 am to 5:30 pm every day.
3. Hope For Animals, Sudhowala
A no-kill rescue that treats injured dogs, finds them homes and holds adoption camps from time to time. Shelter: Khasra No. 405, Sudhowala, Dehradun 248007. Office: Mangla Enclave, Prem Nagar. Call or WhatsApp +91 78180 37628; it doesn’t publish hours, so message first.
4. Nagar Nigam Stray Animal Complaint Cell
The municipal corporation’s line for street-animal complaints, 78179 39719, listed on the Nagar Nigam’s own helpline page. Call it about dog bites, aggressive dogs or sterilisation in your area. The corporation runs its animal birth control programme with Humane World for Animals India.
5. Chief Veterinary Officer, Dehradun (SPCA Dehradun)
The district office of Uttarakhand’s Animal Husbandry Department, at Vikas Bhavan, Survey Chowk, on 0135-2712572, as listed in the department’s own directory. SPCA Dehradun is registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India at the same office, so this is also the number for cruelty complaints. Raahat sends large-animal cases here too.
6. Government Multi-Speciality Hospital for Canines and Felines, Transport Nagar
Uttarakhand’s government hospital just for dogs and cats, run by the Animal Husbandry Department in Transport Nagar. It has an outpatient clinic, an operating theatre, a lab, X-ray and ultrasound, and its vets do surgeries from caesareans to fracture plating. When Garhwal Post reported on it in 2025, registration cost ₹40, an X-ray ₹50 and an ultrasound ₹100, but the emergency wing and admission ward weren’t running for lack of staff. It doesn’t publish a phone number, so go during the day and expect to take the animal home after treatment.
What to do if you find an injured dog in Dehradun
- Move the dog out of traffic only if you can do it safely. A dog in pain may bite, so use a blanket or a leash and keep your face away from its mouth.
- Take a few photos and a 10-second video and note the nearest landmark. In central Dehradun, WhatsApp them to Raahat between 10 am and 4 pm. Near Selaqui, call Healing Saathi. Around Prem Nagar, call Hope For Animals.
- If nobody can take the case, take the dog to a vet yourself. The government hospital for dogs and cats in Transport Nagar is the low-cost option, and locals point people there.
- Ask a neighbour or a feeder who knows the dog to come with you, because a dog that’s scared and hurt will usually let a familiar person lift it long before it lets a stranger anywhere near the wound. Don’t wait on a reply before you act.
Distemper and tick fever in Dehradun
Distemper is the case shelters here turn away most. Raahat won’t admit it, so a dog with a snotty nose, crusty eyes or twitching has to be treated where it is or at a vet. Keep it away from puppies, because distemper spreads through the air. Ticks are the other big one after the monsoon: a dog that’s suddenly weak, off its food or has pale gums needs a blood test for tick fever, and a tick bath on its own won’t fix it. For your own dog, the yearly vaccine covers distemper and parvo.
Getting a street dog or cat sterilised
Raahat sterilises community dogs and cats at its hospital on Sahastradhara Road. For a sterilisation drive in your colony, call the Nagar Nigam’s complaint cell, which runs the city’s programme with Humane World for Animals India. Sterilised street dogs are returned to the same street by law, so feeders don’t lose them.
Dog adoption in Dehradun: how to adopt safely
Every pet on this page is listed by the person who rescued or fostered it. You call them directly. Dog with Blog doesn’t charge anyone for an adoption or a listing, and a genuine rescuer won’t ask for an adoption fee either. A few things make it go well:
- Ask the rescuer how long they’ve had the pet, and what vaccinations and deworming it has had.
- Meet the pet before you decide, twice if you can.
- Expect questions back. A careful rescuer will ask about your home, netting on balconies and windows for a cat, and who is home during the day. Some will ask you to sign a simple adoption form or agree to a follow-up visit.
- Agree on when the pet will be sterilised, usually around six months of age.
- Walk away if anyone asks you to pay upfront for anything beyond real vet bills.
Once your dog is home, register it. In December 2025 the Nagar Nigam published draft bylaws that make a yearly licence compulsory for pet dogs over three months, at ₹500 for an indie, and dogs adopted from shelters are exempt from the fee. Check the current rules with the Nagar Nigam before you apply.
Our step-by-step adoption guide covers the rest. And if you’re open to a dog, look at an Indian pariah dog first: the indie is the dog most Indian rescuers are trying to place.
Others working in Dehradun
You can also reach these three groups directly; each number below is the one they’ve published themselves. Doon Animal Welfare runs a large cow shelter at Hasanpur on the Shimla Bypass and also keeps a dog sanctuary. For an emergency rescue, call 79002 83333. Tibetan Animal Lovers is a registered trust at Dekyiling on Sahastradhara Road; this August it nursed a dog hit by a car back to walking. Call 76184 72637. Samarth India Charitable Trust keeps a shelter for special-needs dogs and spent this autumn treating its residents for tick fever. It often posts kittens and pups that need homes around Dalanwala and MDDA Colony. Call 95481 47061. If nobody picks up, send a photo and the exact location to the same number.

Frequently asked questions
What is the animal helpline number in Dehradun?
There isn’t one number for everything. An injured adult street dog: WhatsApp Raahat on +91 99976 99474 between 10 am and 4 pm, or call Healing Saathi on 080 4736 3636. Street-dog complaints go to the Nagar Nigam on 78179 39719, and an injured cow or horse to the Chief Veterinary Officer, 0135-2712572.
Is there a 24×7 animal ambulance in Dehradun?
Not one we could confirm. Raahat collects animals in the afternoon, and Healing Saathi’s rescue line closes at 5 pm. At night, take the animal to the nearest vet yourself.
Is 1962 an animal helpline for dogs in Dehradun?
1962 is Uttarakhand’s mobile veterinary service for livestock. We found nothing official saying it attends street dogs in the city, so use the numbers above for dogs.
Can I drop a street puppy at a shelter in Dehradun?
Usually not. Raahat doesn’t take healthy puppies and is short of space while it rebuilds. Feed the litter where it is, keep it safe, and list the puppies for adoption so a family can take them straight from you.
Numbers checked on 3 November 2026.
