Your dog will do almost anything for a peanut. Plain ones are fine in small numbers. The salt, the shells, and one hidden ingredient in peanut butter are where the trouble starts.

Can dogs eat peanuts? Yes, if they are plain, unsalted and shelled, in small amounts. The deal-breakers are salt, masala coatings, and xylitol in some peanut butters, which is toxic to dogs.

Are peanuts safe for dogs?

Plain, unsalted, shelled peanuts, either dry-roasted or raw, are safe in moderation. Peanuts are not toxic to dogs. It is the seasoning and the quantity that cause problems.

The benefits, in small amounts

Peanuts carry protein, healthy fats and vitamins B6 and E. That makes a couple of plain peanuts a tasty, high-value training reward. They are a treat, though, not a food group.

The risks: fat, salt, shells and xylitol

  1. Fat. Peanuts are high in fat, and too much fat can trigger stomach upset or pancreatitis.
  2. Salt and masala. Salted, masala or chilli-coated peanuts, like namkeen, add sodium and spices a dog does not need.
  3. Shells. Peanut shells are a choking and blockage risk. Always shell them.
  4. Xylitol. Some sugar-free peanut butters contain xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. Always check the label.

How many peanuts can a dog eat?

Keep treats under 10% of daily calories. For a medium dog that is about four or five plain peanuts; for a small dog, one or two. Not every day.

How to serve peanuts safely

  • Plain, unsalted, shelled peanuts only. No salt, no masala, no chilli.
  • If you use peanut butter, pick a plain, xylitol-free one with no added sugar.
  • Offer them as an occasional treat, never a meal.

When to skip peanuts

Skip them for overweight dogs and dogs prone to pancreatitis, and stop at once if your dog shows any sign of a nut allergy, such as itching or swelling.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if it is plain and xylitol-free with no added sugar. Check every label, because xylitol is toxic to dogs.

Can dogs eat salted or masala peanuts?

No. The salt and spices are hard on a dog. Plain and unsalted only.

Can dogs eat peanut shells?

No. Shells are a choking and obstruction risk. Always remove them.

How many peanuts is too many?

More than a small handful, or peanuts given daily, is too much because of the fat. Keep it occasional.

Not all. Macadamia nuts and walnuts are toxic to dogs. When in doubt, skip the nut.
