Your dog is eyeing your paneer like it owes him money. Before you toss a cube across the kitchen, know this: plain paneer is mostly fine. The paneer most Indian kitchens actually serve is not.

Can dogs eat paneer? Yes, dogs can eat paneer in small amounts, as long as it is plain, unsalted, and unspiced. A cube or two of homemade paneer is a safe occasional treat for most healthy adult dogs. What is not safe is the paneer we usually eat: butter masala, palak paneer, fried or heavily salted paneer. Those carry oil, salt, spices, and often onion and garlic, which are toxic to dogs.

Is paneer safe for dogs?

Paneer is fresh, unaged cheese, the Indian cousin of cottage cheese. Western vets rate plain cottage cheese as one of the few dairy foods that is actually useful for dogs. The American Kennel Club and Purina both list it as safe in moderation. Paneer sits in the same family: high in protein and calcium, with no aging and no additives when it is homemade.

Two catches keep it from being a free pass. Paneer still contains lactose, and most dogs are lactose intolerant to some degree. And Indian paneer, especially the buffalo-milk kind, is richer in fat than Western cottage cheese. So “safe” comes with a portion limit and a few rules.

The benefits, in small amounts

  • Protein: paneer is rich in casein, a slow-digesting protein that is gentle on the stomach.
  • Calcium and phosphorus that support bones and teeth.
  • High moisture, so a cube is not as calorie-dense as a chunk of hard cheese like cheddar.
  • Recovery food: vets sometimes use plain cottage cheese in a bland diet of boiled rice, plain chicken, and a spoon of soft cheese for a dog recovering from a mild stomach upset. Plain paneer can play a similar role.

The risks: why “plain and tiny” matters

  • Lactose: paneer has less lactose than milk, but it is not lactose-free. A sensitive dog can get gas, loose stools, or vomiting.
  • Fat: paneer is fatty, and buffalo-milk paneer more so. Too much fat, too often, is a known trigger for pancreatitis, which is painful and serious.
  • Salt: shop-bought paneer often has added salt. Too much sodium is hard on a dog’s heart and kidneys.
  • The dish, not the cheese: paneer butter masala, palak paneer, kadai paneer, fried paneer. These come loaded with cream, oil, chilli, salt, and usually an onion-garlic base. Onion and garlic damage a dog’s red blood cells. Never share cooked paneer dishes.

How much paneer can a dog eat?

Treats of any kind should stay under 10% of your dog’s daily calories. Because paneer is fatty, keep it on the conservative side:

Dog size Weight Plain paneer, how much How often
Small Under 10 kg Pea-sized to 1 tsp Once or twice a week
Medium 10 to 25 kg About 1 tbsp Once or twice a week
Large Over 25 kg 1 to 2 tbsp Once or twice a week

The first time, give half a teaspoon and wait 24 hours. If there is no gas, loose stool, or vomiting, small amounts are likely fine for your dog.

How to serve paneer safely

  1. Use plain, unsalted paneer, ideally homemade. No masala, no oil, no salt.
  2. Cut it into small cubes. Offer it plain, or mash a little into your dog’s regular food.
  3. Watch the first serving for 24 hours for any tummy trouble.

When to skip paneer entirely

  • Dogs with a history of pancreatitis, or on a vet-prescribed low-fat diet.
  • Overweight dogs.
  • Dogs with a known dairy intolerance or allergy.
  • Very young puppies. Go easy even once they are weaned.

Paneer is not a health food for dogs, and your dog does not need it. A plain cube now and then, as a treat, is fine for most. The danger was never the paneer. It is the masala.

This is general guidance, not veterinary advice. Every dog is different. Check with your vet before adding any new food, especially if your dog has a health condition.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat paneer every day?

No. Keep paneer to an occasional treat, once or twice a week, because of its fat and lactose. Daily dairy raises the odds of stomach upset and weight gain.

Can puppies eat paneer?

A tiny bit of plain paneer is usually fine for healthy puppies past weaning, but their stomachs are sensitive. Start with a crumb and watch for 24 hours.

Is paneer butter masala or palak paneer safe for dogs?

No. The cream, salt, spices, and onion-garlic base make cooked paneer dishes unsafe. Onion and garlic are toxic to dogs even in small amounts.

My dog ate a lot of paneer. Is it an emergency?

A plain-paneer binge usually causes a day of gas or loose stools, not an emergency. Offer water and a light meal. Call your vet if there is repeated vomiting, a swollen or painful belly, or if the paneer was salted or part of a masala dish.

Is paneer or curd better for dogs?

Plain curd (dahi) is lower in fat, easier to digest for many dogs, and carries gut-friendly probiotics. For most dogs, a spoon of plain dahi is the gentler choice.
