Almost every Indian dog has been slipped a piece of roti under the table. A little plain chapati is usually fine, but it is filler, not nutrition.

Is roti safe for dogs?

Mostly yes, in moderation. Plain wheat roti or chapati is not toxic and is fine as an occasional small treat. It is, however, mostly carbohydrate with little real nutrition, and some dogs are wheat-sensitive.

The benefits, in small amounts

Honestly, the benefits are minor: a little energy, and a handy plain piece to hide medication in or round off a bland meal. Roti is not something your dog needs.

The risks to know

Some dogs are sensitive or allergic to wheat, which can show up as itchy skin or an upset stomach. Never give roti with salt, ghee, butter, sabzi, pickle or as leftover masala food. Being carb-heavy, too much leads to weight gain.

How much roti can a dog eat?

A small plain piece occasionally, kept well under 10% of daily calories. It should never be a daily staple.

How to serve roti safely

Plain only, with no salt, ghee or oil, torn into small pieces. Never smeared with sabzi, dal or achaar.

When to skip roti

Avoid roti for wheat-sensitive dogs, and limit it for overweight or diabetic dogs.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat chapati every day?

Better as an occasional treat than a daily food. Roti is mostly filler and adds little nutrition to a dog’s diet.

Is wheat bad for dogs?

Most dogs tolerate wheat fine, but some are allergic or sensitive. Watch for itching or stomach upset after roti.

Can dogs eat roti with ghee or sabzi?

No. Salt, ghee, oil, onion, garlic and masala in sabzi are not safe for dogs. Plain roti only.

Is roti or rice better for dogs?

Plain rice is gentler and more commonly recommended, especially for an upset stomach. Roti is fine only as an occasional plain treat.

Can puppies eat roti?

A tiny plain piece occasionally is unlikely to harm, but puppies are better off on their proper food.
