How to use the checker
Type any food into the box above. The checker tells you whether it's generally safe, needs caution, or is one to avoid, with a one-line reason. Where a food has a full guide, tap “Read more” for safe portions and how to serve it. When in doubt, your vet is the final word.
Foods dogs can safely eat (in moderation)
Plenty of everyday Indian foods are fine as occasional treats: plain rice, roti, cooked eggs, plain curd, banana, watermelon (no seeds), mango (no pit), coconut, plain peanuts and makhana. See the full list in our human foods for dogs guide.
Foods that are toxic to dogs (never feed)
Some foods are dangerous even in small amounts. Never give your dog chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic or xylitol (a sweetener in sugar-free gum and some peanut butters), and keep macadamia nuts, caffeine, coffee and alcohol away too. Indian spice mixes like garam masala are best avoided, since they usually contain onion and garlic.
