Winters, cold and unforgiving, are the harshest for the homeless ― humans and animals alike.
Thankfully this cafe in Greece knows the literal meaning of keeping warmth in the heart. Hott Spott Café on the island of Lesbos, Greece has received worldwide acclaim for its generosity. Each night, the shop closes its doors to the public and welcomes stray dogs who may otherwise face freezing temperatures, to enter.
“When the bar closes each night, the dogs come and sleep here. We don’t have a problem. From July, every night there is a dog on the couch! ”
~Antonis, waiter @ Hott Spott Café
The island of Lesbos’s solidarity towards humans and animals is remarkable! In 2015 alone, they allowed more than 700.000 refugees from Syria and other Middle East countries to enter Europe.
Though Greek law requires municipalities to deal with the problem of stray animals, the law is most often ignored. The Greek debt crisis has further put animal welfare on the fringe.
Thankfully animal welfare groups along with caring individuals are adopting and caring for abused/abandoned animals at their own expense.
We hope the kindness shown by this cafe catches on further, across the Aegean Sea to lands beyond.
Here’s to the staff of the Hott Spott cafe for giving stray dogs a warm place to sleep!
