Summer in India means mangoes, and your dog wants in. The good news: the soft flesh is a genuinely healthy treat. The pit and the skin are where it goes wrong.
Can dogs eat mango? Yes. Ripe mango flesh is safe and packed with vitamins, as long as you peel it, remove the pit, and keep it to an occasional treat. The sugar is the catch.
Is mango safe for dogs?
Yes. The American Kennel Club lists mango flesh as safe for dogs. The only rules are to peel it and remove the large pit, then serve the soft flesh in small amounts.
The benefits, in small amounts
Mango is more than a sweet treat. The flesh carries vitamins A, B6, C and E, plus potassium and beta-carotene, and a little fibre. For a healthy dog, a few pieces are a real nutritional bonus.
The risks: pit, skin and sugar
- The pit. It is a choking hazard, it can block the gut, and it contains a small amount of cyanide. Never let your dog chew or swallow it.
- The skin. It is tough to digest and contains urushiol, the same irritant found in poison ivy, so peel it off.
- Sugar. Mango is high in natural sugar, so too much means weight gain and an upset stomach, and it is a poor choice for diabetic dogs.
How much mango can a dog eat?
Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories. For most dogs that is a few small cubes, once in a while. Smaller dog, smaller portion.
How to serve mango safely
- Peel it, remove the pit, and cut the flesh into small, bite-sized pieces.
- Fresh, ripe mango only. Skip dried mango (concentrated sugar) and canned mango (heavy syrup).
- Frozen mango chunks make a nice hot-weather treat for bigger dogs.
When to skip mango
Go easy or skip it for diabetic and overweight dogs, and for any dog with a sensitive stomach.
Frequently asked questions
My dog swallowed a mango pit. What now?
Call your vet. Watch for choking, vomiting, drooling, loss of appetite or a hard belly, which can signal a blockage. Do not wait it out.
Can dogs eat mango skin?
Better not. It is hard to digest and contains urushiol, which can irritate some dogs. Peel it first.
Can dogs eat dried mango?
Only a tiny bit, rarely. Drying concentrates the sugar, so it is easy to overdo.
Can diabetic dogs have mango?
It is best avoided because of the sugar. Ask your vet before offering any sweet fruit.
How often can my dog have mango?
As an occasional treat, not a daily one. A couple of times a week at most.
