Adopt a Cat or Kitten in Pune

Pune's cats tend to arrive a step ahead. About one in three has had a first vaccination, a higher share than any other city here, and four in ten are litter trained.

Adopting one starts with a message. Contact the person named on the listing, go and meet the cat, and if it feels right she comes home with you. Nothing goes through us, and we don't charge anyone a rupee.

This page shows cats listed in the last four months, newest first. If a cat has found a home since, her card says so. Older listings are still on the main Pune page.

Before you message a rescuer

Expect questions back. A good rescuer will ask whether your windows and balcony can be netted, whether anyone at home is allergic, and who looks after the cat when you travel. They're asking because the cat can't.

Hardly any of these cats came from a shelter. Each one is listed by the person looking after her, so the listing can tell you what a shelter card can't: whether she uses a tray, whether she hides when the doorbell rings, whether she'll end up asleep on your feet.

Most are indies, the Indian street cats everyone grows up around. They cope with the heat on their own and don't come with the breathing trouble that flat-faced breeds carry into an Indian summer.
